Research Notes
Exploring Riho and Shaping the Future of Budo
May each study become a step toward new understanding.
Research Notes is a collection of studies and reflections by Akira Masuda, based on decades of martial arts practice, teaching, and research.
Rather than focusing solely on karate techniques, these notes explore a wide range of topics, including Riho (universal principles), Budo philosophy, education, teaching methods, safety, competition, leadership, and organizational development.
Research is not about presenting final answers.
It is a continuous process of asking questions, developing ideas, testing them through practice, and refining our understanding over time.
For that reason, these notes record not only conclusions, but also the journey of exploration itself.
Budo should not merely preserve tradition. By understanding its essential principles and adapting them thoughtfully to the needs of each generation, we can carry its spirit into the future.
It is my sincere hope that these Research Notes will provide inspiration and new perspectives for practitioners, instructors, researchers, and all who seek to deepen their understanding of Budo.
