Guided by the North Star, Reflecting on Budo and Life

Hokushinan is a place for exploring life through the practice of Budo.

The name Hokushinan is inspired by the North Star, which has guided travelers and navigators for centuries. Constant and unwavering, it has long served as a symbol of direction, purpose, and hope.

In the same way, Budo is not only about developing technical skill. It is also about finding a guiding principle that helps us continue to grow as human beings throughout our lives.

The name Hokushinan reflects the aspiration to pursue lifelong learning through martial arts—not only refining techniques, but also cultivating character, wisdom, and integrity.

Here, Akira Masuda shares reflections drawn from decades of martial arts practice, teaching, international exchange, and research. Topics include Riho (universal principles), Budo philosophy, education, leadership, health, human development, and organizational development.

Hokushinan does not claim to provide all the answers.

Rather, it is a place to ask meaningful questions, deepen understanding, and continue learning together with others.

Learn from the past. Engage with the present. Create the future.

That is the spirit of Hokushinan.
