Budo Education Research

Studying Budo, Cultivating People, Shaping the Future

At the International Budo Human Development Association (IBMA), Budo Education Research is the foundation of everything we do.

Budo is far more than a system of martial techniques or a competitive sport.

It is an educational discipline that develops the body and mind, cultivates character, strengthens human relationships, and helps individuals contribute positively to society.

Through Budo Education Research, IBMA seeks to explore these educational values and apply them to the needs of the modern world.

What Is Budo Education Research?

Budo Education Research is the study of how budo contributes to human development and how its educational values can benefit society.

Our research extends beyond martial techniques to include:

  • Budo philosophy
  • Ethics
  • Character development
  • Teaching methods
  • Learning theory
  • Psychology
  • Human movement
  • Health and well-being
  • Safety education
  • International exchange
  • Community engagement

The ultimate purpose of this research is not simply to produce knowledge, but to apply that knowledge in education and society.

The Concept of Riho

At the heart of IBMA’s research is the concept of Riho.

We define Riho as:

Universal principles of judgment and action that accord with the essential nature of humanity and the natural world, creating better relationships among people and between people and their environment.

From the IBMA perspective, martial techniques are not merely physical movements.

Each technique embodies principles concerning human relationships, self-development, and harmony with natural laws.

IBMA studies these principles systematically and seeks to apply them not only to budo, but also to education, daily life, leadership, and society.

Why Study Riho?

Techniques, training methods, and teaching styles evolve over time.

However, the underlying principles that reflect human nature and the laws of nature remain remarkably constant.

Understanding these principles allows practitioners to move beyond simply learning how to perform a technique and toward understanding why it works and how its wisdom can be applied throughout life.

For IBMA, studying Riho means exploring the enduring foundations that give budo its educational and cultural significance.

Our Areas of Research

IBMA conducts research in four major areas.

1. Riho Studies

Research into the fundamental principles of budo and their application to contemporary life and society.

2. Educational Studies

Research on character education, teaching methodology, curriculum development, digital learning, and lifelong education.

3. Technical Studies

Research on fundamental techniques, kata, kumite, body mechanics, and safe training methods.

4. Applied Social Studies

Research into the application of budo in youth development, health promotion, community engagement, and international exchange.

Bringing Research into Society

Research has value only when it serves people.

IBMA shares its research through:

  • The Digital Budo Textbook
  • Books and publications
  • Seminars and workshops
  • Instructor education
  • International exchange programs
  • Community outreach activities

Our goal is to transform research into practical knowledge that enriches education and society.

Creating the Future Through Budo Education Research

Budo is not merely a tradition to be preserved.

It is a living cultural heritage that continues to grow through thoughtful study and responsible innovation.

Through Budo Education Research and the study of Riho, IBMA seeks to cultivate people, contribute to society, and connect the world through the enduring educational values of budo.
