Cooperation with IBMA and Affiliation with IBMA KYOKUSHIN KAI

IBMA (International Budo Human Development Association) develops relationships of cooperation with organizations and dojos that support the principles of IBMA, regardless of Karate style, school, or Budo discipline.

Organizations and dojos that value the history, spirit, techniques, and Budo principles of Kyokushin Karate and wish to contribute to their preservation, study, and development may also apply for affiliation with IBMA Kyokushin Kai.

Two Forms of Participation

1. Cooperation with IBMA

This is intended for organizations and dojos, regardless of Karate style or Budo discipline, that support the principles of IBMA and wish to cooperate in areas such as Budo education, research, instructor development, international exchange, and social contribution.

Cooperation with IBMA does not constitute organizational affiliation with or organizational membership in IBMA. It also does not make an organization or dojo a branch or subordinate organization of IBMA.

After reviewing the application, IBMA and the applicant will confirm their respective activities and the areas in which cooperation is desired, and may establish an ongoing cooperative relationship where appropriate.

As a general rule, IBMA does not establish an organizational category called an “IBMA Certified Organization” equivalent to the Certified Organization system operated by IBMA Kyokushin Kai.

2. Affiliation with IBMA Kyokushin Kai

This system is intended for organizations and dojos that value the history, spirit, fundamentals, kata, techniques, and training systems of Kyokushin Karate and wish to cooperate in their preservation, study, and development.

Organizations and dojos seeking affiliation with IBMA Kyokushin Kai are subject to a prescribed Affiliation Review. The review considers matters including the history and record of activities of the organization or dojo, the backgrounds of its representative and responsible instructors, instructional and management systems, safety management, social credibility, and understanding of and support for the principles of IBMA and IBMA Kyokushin Kai.

Organizations and dojos considered suitable following the Affiliation Review will normally enter a one-year Provisional Affiliation period. At the end of that period, activities, compliance with regulations, the cooperative relationship, and other relevant matters will be reviewed before Full Affiliation is considered.

Where further confirmation is necessary, the Provisional Affiliation period may be extended by one additional year. As a general rule, the maximum Provisional Affiliation period is two years.

Organizations and dojos applying for affiliation with IBMA Kyokushin Kai do not need to submit a separate application for cooperation with IBMA. Appropriate cooperation with IBMA may be confirmed and coordinated through the affiliation relationship.

A formally Affiliated Organization that meets additional standards relating to history, continuing activity, sufficient organizational scale, stable management and instructional systems, safety management, and social credibility may subsequently be recognized as a Certified Organization following a separate certification review.

As a general rule, IBMA Kyokushin Kai does not establish a separate organizational category called a “Certified Dojo.”

Differences Between the Systems

Independence of Organizations and Dojos

Following cooperation with IBMA or affiliation with IBMA Kyokushin Kai, the following matters remain, as a general rule, under the independent management of each organization or dojo:

• Organization or dojo name, history, and record of activities
• Representatives, instructors, teaching policies, and training content
• Organizational structure, membership systems, fees, finances, and day-to-day operations
• Regional activities and relationships with other organizations

However, use of the names, logos, certification designations, dan ranks, instructor qualifications, or other protected designations of IBMA or IBMA Kyokushin Kai must comply with the applicable regulations and any required individual approval.

Individual Membership Requirements for IBMA Kyokushin Kai Affiliation

• As a general rule, at least five IBMA General Members must be connected with the organization or dojo.
• If it is difficult to have five members at the time of a new affiliation application, an application may be made with at least three IBMA General Members together with a plan to reach at least five members by the first affiliation renewal, subject to approval.
• Individual membership registration must be based on the free choice of each person. An organization or dojo may not register an individual against that person’s wishes.
• IBMA Full Membership is not mandatory at the initial affiliation application stage.
• When applying for Certified Organization status, at least one of the representative or the person responsible for coordination with IBMA should, as a general rule, be an IBMA Full Member.

Regional Categories, Membership Fees, and Affiliation Fees

For overseas members, organizations, and dojos, regional categories A, B, and C are applied in consideration of local economic conditions. The applicable category is confirmed by the IBMA Secretariat based on the member’s place of residence or the principal area of activity of the organization or dojo.

Standard Annual Cost Including Five General Members

The amounts below show the standard combined annual cost of the IBMA Kyokushin Kai affiliation fee and five IBMA General Members. Optional Supporting Membership fees, Full Membership fees, and certification-related fees are not included.
