The Philosophy of IBMA

IBMA (International Budo Human Development Association) regards budo not merely as a system of martial techniques or a form of competition, but as an educational culture through which people cultivate both body and mind and explore better ways of living.

Through the practice of budo, we learn to examine ourselves, strengthen our bodies and minds, and develop the ability to face difficulties. We also learn to respect others and to use our abilities responsibly for the benefit of society.

IBMA places this ideal of human development through budo at the foundation of all its activities.

Advancing Research in Budo Education

It is important to preserve the techniques, principles, and spirit that have been passed down through generations. Preservation alone, however, is not enough.

We must also examine how budo contributes to human development and consider its educational, cultural, and social significance.

IBMA connects practice with research. We seek safer and more effective approaches to training and instruction while advancing research in budo education that responds to the needs of contemporary society and future generations.

Supporting Lifelong Learning

The study of budo is not limited to youth or to a particular stage of life.

Regardless of age, experience, physical condition, or living circumstances, each person can continue learning, deepen their understanding, and pursue personal development in a way suited to their individual situation.

Promoting International Exchange and Mutual Understanding

IBMA promotes exchange among budo practitioners, instructors, researchers, educators, and organizations in Japan and throughout the world. Through these connections, we seek to expand a global network of friendship and cooperation founded on budo.

Passing budo culture on to future generations requires more than preserving tradition in an unchanged form.

We must respect the wisdom and spirit inherited from our predecessors while continuing to examine their essential meaning. We must also consider how that wisdom can be applied within contemporary society and developed for the future.

IBMA seeks to unite the preservation of tradition with creative development. In doing so, we aim to transmit the enduring value of budo to future generations while opening new possibilities for its continued growth.

Contributing to Local Communities and Society

The value of budo should not remain confined to the dojo or the field of competition.

The courtesy, responsibility, perseverance, courage, self-discipline, and consideration for others cultivated through budo should be expressed in our families, schools, workplaces, and local communities.

IBMA promotes activities that contribute to society through youth development, health and well-being, community exchange, educational support, and other forms of social engagement.
